Homework

Homework is an important part of learning and enables students to develop their independence and resilience across the curriculum.

Homework is work that is set to be done outside the timetabled curriculum. It contains an element of independent study in that it is not usually directly supervised by a teacher. It is important in raising student achievement.

Not all homework is done at home; in fact, for some pupils who find it hard to work at home, or for some tasks which may require resources (books, software, equipment) more readily available at school, it is necessary or desirable to carry out the task at school.

Homework enhances pupil learning, improves achievement and develops pupils’ study skills and as such is an integral part of the curriculum. It requires careful planning and integration into the scheme of work of each curriculum area.

Purpose of homework

Research shows that regular homework has a positive impact on progress, particularly for secondary school students. Homework linked to classroom work is more effective, especially when students understand its purpose – whether to increase knowledge, develop fluency or apply learning in new contexts.

Types of homework

Homework tasks will vary depending on the subject and year group. These may include:

Homework guidelines

The amount of homework will increase as students progress through the school:

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)
Students will typically complete around 20–30 minutes of homework for core subjects, with additional time for reading each week.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)
Students can expect to complete approximately 30–45 minutes of homework per subject, reflecting the increased demands of the Key Stage 4 curriculum.
Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form)
Independent study is an essential part of post-16 education. Students should expect to complete around 4–5 hours of independent study per subject each week, using non-contact periods effectively.
