Kingsley council and student leadership

Lift Kingsley has a long history of student leadership and student-led democracy. Our students have not only represented our school in the Hounslow Youth Parliament, but have also risen to the ranks of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament, representing Hounslow. Internally, we have annual elections.

Every tutor group, comprising six Tutor Captains per year group Y7-13.  These 36 students are our Student Council. Students meet half-termly and they play a key role in leading school events and school charity work, particularly, Fundraising Friday events and Hounslow Foodbox Collections which occur on a termly basis.

This year, our students will work with local social action organisation, TimeGivers, to drive our culture of volunteerism within our local community.

Student leaders also play a key role in whole school event organisation and facilitation such as:

  • Open Evening tour leaders
  • Open Morning tour leaders
  • Interview Panels
  • Student Voice sharing at Student Council Meetings on a half-termly basis
  • Academy Council Student Voice
  • Christmas Lunch Events
  • Culture Day Events
  • Charity Events
  • Parents’ Evenings
  • Transition Events for new students

Our Student Council is also closely linked to local government, regularly participating in events such as: Hounslow Climate Summit, Hounslow Summit, Hounslow Council Annual Black History Month Celebration, Hounslow Borough Council International Women’s Day, Hounslow Council Pride.

Kingsley Council

Kingsley Council exists to represent the voice of students, promote their ideas and advocate their views and interests. It is a democratic and non-political association. Its role includes helping the school to serve its students effectively, increasing engagement with the local community and bringing wider issues into focus at the academy. All members are democratically elected with an interview process additionally for Head and Deputy Head students.

Kingsley Council aims to:

  • Develop the positive relationship between staff and students.
  • Increase the participation of students in the running of the school.
  • Help students perfect their organisation and communication skills.
  • Represent the wide and diverse views of our student body.
  • Raise awareness among students of pertinent issues over health, tolerance and the environment.
  • Represent the academy and exhibit its DNA consistently.

Kingsley Council will represent the school in community events, help in the recruitment of prospective staff and will champion the values of our academy.

Senior Student Council

At Lift Kingsley, we believe that our Head Student and our Senior Prefects must be elected democratically.  Consequently, we advertise openly for the position and short-list on the basis of their electoral success. Students are given the opportunity to apply and campaign for the role of Head Student or Senior Prefect. Head Student Elections occur over a week of campaigning and electioneering, culminating in hustings where students actively participate in voting. Staff are also given the opportunity to vote. Once votes are counted, our Head Students and deputies are appointed and they, then, elect their cabinet under the supervision of Ms Ryan and the Sixth Form team.

Head Students lead the termly Student Council meetings and set agenda items. They meet regularly with the Principal and communicate pertinent information and issues as they arise.  Our Head Students and Senior Prefects play a key role in Open Evenings, Welcome Evenings, charity work and events.

Student Leadership

Student leadership thrives at Kingsley Academy and student voice is at the heart of what we do.

  • Every September, each tutor group elects a Tutor Captain who represents their tutor group at half-termly student council meetings.
  • Each Autumn, the whole school democratically votes for their Head Students through a rigorous election process. Students must apply by written application and interview.
  • They are then put forward to campaign and they outline their manifesto for leadership at assembly hustings. Students and staff then vote for their top two candidates. Students can then apply for Senior Prefect positions under the leadership of the Head Students.

The work of our student leadership team is boundless and the following list is not exhaustive:

  • Representing their tutor group on student council
  • Leading school tours on Open Evening
  • Participating in interview panels
  • Representing the school at Hounslow Borough Council Events
  • Running key events such as: Christmas lunch, outreach days, food bank collections  and charity events.
  • Representing the school at Hounslow Borough Council meetings
  • Student leaders and tutor groups vote for the charities that their year group will support for the forthcoming year in all fundraising events.
