Reading

At Lift Kingsley, we believe that reading is not just a functional skill, but a passport to different worlds, perspectives, and possibilities. Our mission is to foster a vibrant reading culture where every student, regardless of their starting point, develops the fluency and stamina required to thrive both in school and the world beyond.

Our Reading Values
Access for all: To ensure every student leaves us with a reading age that matches or exceeds their chronological age.
Reading for Pleasure: To move beyond the classroom and inspire a genuine love for literature.
Curriculum Integration: To embed a culture of reading across every subject, recognising that every teacher is a teacher of reading.

KS3: Our English curriculum is designed to inspire an appreciation for literature while developing both critical reading and writing skills. Across Key Stage 3 students explore a range of contemporary and classic texts including Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sherlock Holmes and modern works like Noughts and Crosses.

KS4: In Key Stage 4, students explore a wide range of literature that spans different periods and genres. They delve into Shakespeare’s Macbeth, explore the themes and characters of A Christmas Carol, and analyse the social commentary in An Inspector Calls. Exam preparation and approaches to deeper understanding of literature are at the forefront of learning.

KS5: At Key Stage 5, students engage with more complex literary works, delving into texts like Othello, The Colour Purple, Frankenstein, and A Streetcar Named Desire. This rich and varied curriculum equips students with the ability to critique literature and sharpen their understanding of the world, preparing them for further education and beyond.

Targeted interventions and support

We believe that every student has the right to become a proficient, confident reader. To ensure no child is left behind, we use a data-driven model to identify specific barriers and provide high-impact, targeted support at every stage of the reading journey.

Home Learning

Reading doesn't just happen in the classroom. To support our students' journey toward becoming elite readers, we use Reading Plus.

We know that students engage more when they have a choice. Through Reading Plus, our students have access to over 1,000 level-matched texts.

Whether they are interested in STEM, History, Sports, or Narrative Fiction, the library is updated regularly to ensure there is always something fresh and relevant to read.

By dynamically adjusting to each student’s individual needs, it focuses on three core areas:

Fluency: Using a patented "Guided Window," the program trains the eye to move across the page at an efficient pace, eliminating the habit of re-reading lines.
Comprehension: After every text, students complete bespoke quizzes that check for understanding, inference, and the ability to summarize.
Vocabulary: Students are exposed to high-level academic language in context, helping them master the words they will encounter in their GCSEs and beyond.

The Home-School Connection

Because Reading Plus is web-based, the "Reading Journey" continues at home.

Accessibility: Students can log in from any tablet, laptop, or desktop.
Instant Feedback: Students see their "Combos" (streaks of successful comprehension) and word-count goals in real-time, gamifying the experience and building motivation.
Targeted Goals: We recommend that students complete 60 minutes of lessons per week to see significant gains in their reading age.
